Nice! Glad to be of service in homeschooling, I’m going through it myself.

I assumed you were in the U.K., judging by your spelling of colo(u)r. I knew there was a chance you might be a Canuck, but didn’t realize Canadians say “poo”. My apologies for assuming you are in the U.K. I love Canada (especially Victoria and Vancouver), and I’d ask you omit the “across the pond” comment from my previous post. And imbecile that I am, I posted my last name. Oops on that, too. Please edit that out. I DO love your website in spite of my idiocy!

I have a different academic background (Finance) but wish I had loved chemistry when I was younger like I love it now. Thank you so much for your informative and highly entertaining website! I am a stay-at-home mom now, and am always looking for ways to make science fun for my kids (especially during the pandemic). I had the neighborhood kids jumping rope and reciting the periodic table with each jump. They loved it. One kid can now recite the first 22 elements in order!

There one exception to the brown colour I’ve seen with my eyes: panda’s poo is green :)
I assume it has to do with their poor abily to digest bambu, leaving a lot of green-coloured residues at the end of the process

Sometimes it is no more complex than the newborn is not moving its bowels enough. The biliary tree, draining from the liver, cannot offload these breakdown products into the jejunum if the traffic there is jammed. Stagnant bile product outflow is reabsorbed and circulated systemically. The resulting deposition in tissue produces jaundice.

Moving bowels is a new trick for an infant, they have been receiving fluid, electrolyte and nutritional support directly to their bloodstream from their mother’s placental interface, their bowels are like a Thanksgiving day parade that is cued-up, waiting for their signal to start marching.

Photo therapy relieves symptoms by continuing the breakdown in the surface tissues but the fix is to get the bowel moving, so the infants need to feed in order to stimulate traffic flow in the intestine, permitting the biliary on-ramp to let its traffic go with the flow, relieving the recirculation and deposition of bile products throughout the body.

Babies need to eat, sleep and poop. If they do that well (absent functional liver problems) bilirubin resolves without additional intervention.
